Alex Cross won’t hit theaters until Friday, October 19, but that hasn’t stopped star Tyler Perry and author James Patterson from putting together plans for a sequel. According to Deadline , the man who brought the detective to life is close to reaching a deal with the actor and award-winning playwright regarding the proposed follow-up.

Should everything fall into place, Patterson’s novel Double Cross will likely serve as the next installment in the Alex Cross series. Tyler Perry is reportedly interested in reprising his role as the detective. While Patterson and Perry may be close to reaching an agreement, the fate of the sequel lies in the box office performance of Alex Cross . If this production fail to generate a substantial amount of money this weekend, then chances are nobody will want to bankroll another movie.

When and if Double Cross gets the proverbial green light, it’s unclear whether or not Alex Cross director Rob Cohen will return for another go-around. Given the negative reviews the film has generated thus far, the xXx filmmaker might not be too keen to lend his name to another installment in the series.

Internet Movie Database describes Alex Cross as follows:

“After Washington DC detective Alex Cross is told that a family member has been murdered, he vows to track down the killer. He soon discovers that she was not his first victim and that things are not what they seem.”

Once the promotional machine for Alex Cross has been officially shut down, Tyler Perry will transfer his time and energy to The Marriage Counselor , the filmmaker’s latest directorial effort. The film, which is slated to arrive in theaters on March 29, 2013, stars Vanessa Williams, Kim Kardashian, and Brandy Norwood among others.

Alex Cross , meanwhile, opens in North American theaters on October 19. Will you catch Tyler Perry’s latest movie in theaters this weekend?
