Futurama said goodbye to its legion of fans one more time on Wednesday night (September 4).
Although the beloved animated series was recently given a new lease on life, it would seem the show wasn’t long for this world. The series bid farewell to viewers roughly three years after Comedy Central decided to take a chance on the comedy.
Executive producer and series co-creator David X. Cohen recently told TV Guide that he thinks this is probably the end of Futurama . The characters could always return in more direct-to-video movies down the road, but the series has essentially run its course.
Cohen explained:
Part of it is that the episode is so satisfying to me. It almost feels like we’d be wasting it if we came back again… But on the other hand, I’m reminded that I did say that with full conviction at least twice before, so people don’t seem to believe me. My opinion has been shown to be not of much value in predicting the future on this one subject.
Futurama was originally developed by Cohen and The Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening. After kicking things off back in 1999, the folks at FOX would pull the plug on the cartoon in 2003. Seven years later, the show would find a new home on Comedy Central.
After the first cancellation, the producers worked on a handful of enjoyable straight-to-video movies. Futurama: Bender’s Big Score , The Beast with a Billion Backs , Bender’s Game , and Into the Wild Green Yonder were all released prior to the show’s resurrection on Comedy Central.
