The Poltergeist remake taking shape at MGM has finally landed a director.

Filmmaker Gil Kenan will step behind the camera for the remake. Kenan previously handled directing duties on the animated comedy Monster House and the 2008 adventure City of Ember . He is also working on a project entitled A Giant for The Henson Company.

MGM’s Poltergeist project is a remake of the 1982 horror classic directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg. Sam Raimi, Nathan Kahane, and Roy Lee will produce the forthcoming remake.

David Lindsay-Abaire, Paul Harris Boardman, Scott Derrickson, Juliet Snowden, and Stiles White have all contributed to the Poltergeist script . It’s unclear if Kenan will give the current draft a quick polish before production begins.

Lindsay-Abaire said last year that MGM was very excited about the project. He also claimed to have nothing but love and adoration for the original movie.

“Well, you know there’s not too much I can say,” the writer explained. “I will say that I handed in a second draft and people are incredibly excited about it. They’re not the director, but they’re in search of a director.”

He added, “I will also say that there are very few people who are as obsessed with the original movie as I am, so I would try to write a script that I would want to see as a fan.”

Reports surfaced last year that Oz: The Great and Powerful mastermind Sam Raimi would direct the Poltergeist remake for the studio. Since the filmmaker has his hands full with several other properties at the moment, he will produce the movie instead.

As far as the story is concerned, there aren’t many details about the plot making the rounds at the moment. It’s also currently unknown when MGM would like to have the flick in theaters.

Are you a fan of Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist ? What do you think about the remake that’s presently taking shape over at MGM?
