Holly Holm Says Beating Miesha Tate Is More Important Than Beating Ronda Rousey

Holly Holm recently admitted that beating Miesha at UFC 196 will be more important to her than when she knocked out Ronda Rousey in November at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia.

The world went crazy when Holm knocked out the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, and now Holm wants to prove to everyone that she isn’t just a “one hit wonder.” That’s why the fight against Miesha is so important; Holly doesn’t want to be remembered simply as the girl that defeated Ronda Rousey .

“It’s just as important of a fight. I mean I don’t want to be a one-hit wonder. Even more of an important fight,” Holm told Fox Sports on Wednesday. “A lot of people are wondering ‘what’s really going to happen now after that kind of a victory?’. Is she the real deal? Is she really going to do it? There’s a lot more pressure on this that I put on myself but that’s what I’m here for.”

Holm was originally scheduled to take on Rousey in a rematch during UFC 200 in July. However, Ronda’s current film schedule conflicted with the fight, leaving Holly with a tough choice: to wait on Ronda, or continue to stay active and fight. UFC president Dana White agreed to an interim fight, but was originally persistent that Holm wait until the rematch to fight again.

“Holly’s used to staying active,” Holly Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez said in January. “We’re from the old school and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. … [Tate] deserves a shot, but it’s not for me to decide. They want Holly to wait for Ronda. Anything can happen in the sport, but we haven’t come to terms on the rematch, and until we come to terms we just want to keep plugging away.”

Many are wondering why Holm insists on taking the unnecessary risk by fighting Tate instead of waiting for the big payday when she gets to take on Rousey again.

“A lot of people before I took this fight are like ‘that’s a big risk for you to take a fight with somebody else.’ Well, what are we in this for?” Holm said.

Miesha Tate is just as eager to take on Holm. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Tate believes she can beat the current women’s bantamweight champion, and is referring to herself as Holm’s kryptonite .

“I really think that I’m Holly Holm’s kryptonite,” Miesha said. “I am the worst matchup that Holly could ask for. I have more ring experience. I have a wrestling background, which is a threat there and it’s a completely different style of takedowns. She has never fought a girl even close to my style in MMA.”

“I’ve looked at all the opponents she fought, none of them have put the kind of pressure on her that I’m going to put on her. The right kind of pressure,” Tate added. “It’s not the kind of pressure that’s reckless abandon, it’s not going to be desperation. It’s going to be an ‘oh (expletive)’ type of pressure.”

Holly Holm will be taking on Miesha Tate during UFC 196 on Saturday, March 5. The event, which will also include a match-up between Connor McGregor and Nate Diaz, will be available via pay-per-view.
