Destiny owners hoping to get some play time in Thursday, September 3, should adjust their schedules accordingly. Bungie announced the PlayStation and Xbox shooter will be offline for maintenance for up to six hours in final preparation for the 2.0 update release.

Bungie support made the Destiny offline announcement through the Bungie Help Twitter account Tuesday evening, followed by a second announcement from the main Bungie Twitter account Wednesday morning. The game will be offline starting at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT and will be unavailable until 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT.

Obviously, this scheduled maintenance impacts European players more than North American players. The offline schedule is during prime time playing hours on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean, versus what are essentially work and school hours for the Americas.

Players that are in Destiny before the maintenance begins will be notified in-game that they should wrap up what they are doing before it goes offline. Use of the Bungie website and the Destiny Companion app usability may also be restricted during this time while the developer tinkers under the hood.

The offline maintenance periods have picked up the closer we get to the release of the Destiny 2.0 update. Bungie took the game offline in August , July , and June while preparing for The Taken King launch. The maintenance is to lay the groundwork for the expansion coming September 15, plus the Destiny 2.0 update arriving next Tuesday, September 8. The changes detailed by Bungie thus far have been significant, and there’s little of the game that hasn’t been touched in some way.

As has been covered here frequently in the past few months, Destiny is overhauling the leveling system to separate a character’s overall level from their light level. How Exotics are being handled and stored is being completely re-worked, while an all-new system is being implemented for weapons and armor on top of various nerfs and buffs . There will be swords , changes to currency , and a doubling of Vault space , as well.

Even Ghost , the character’s companion, is getting a makeover, with new voice acting performed by Nolan North, while there will be changes to the Story and Quest structure , too. Just don’t expect to see the King’s Fall raid at launch.

How Bungie is addressing connection and lag issues with the Destiny is still unknown. The developer is definitely preparing the battle space for the huge 2.0 update next week, though.
