Bowe Bergdahl is free to roam as he pleases while awaiting a court martial on treason charges, and he chose to spend some time at a pot farm in California . President Obama traded five Gitmo Taliban detainees for the return of Bergdahl, who was caught in the middle of a pot raid at the marijuana farm earlier this week.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Captain Greg Van Patten told Fox News that Bowe Bergdahl was detained during the pot raid at a home in Redwood City, California. The county marijuana eradication team was serving a search warrant when they encountered the accused traitor.

The man President Obama said he would make “ absolutely no apologies ” for working to bring back to his parents was not determined to be connected to the marijuana growing operations, according to the California sheriff’s office. Captain Van Patten said Bergdahl identified himself to the deputies after being detained, and the Department of Defense was alerted to the situation.

Defense Department officials confirmed that the man accused of treason was on leave and reportedly asked the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office for assistance “getting him back.” Deputies ultimately drove Bowe Bergdahl to a “halfway point” to meet with Army staffers to hand over the controversial soldier.

“U.S. Army North was contacted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s office on July 21 regarding an incident within their jurisdiction in which Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was present,” United States Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith said. “Sergeant Bergdahl was on authorized leave in California at that time. He was not arrested and has returned to his duty station at Fort Sam Houston He has not been charged with any crime involving his time on leave.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr , Bowe Bergdahl allegedly called his unit post in Afghanistan the day after he went missing to tell them that he was deserting. The man swapped for the Gitmo Five also allegedly wrote his father, Bob Bergdahl , and referred to America as “disgusting” and shared other unflattering statements about the war and his role in the conflict.

According to an Associated Press report, a 2010 Pentagon investigation reportedly concluded that Bergdahl had simply walked away from his unit in Afghanistan, prompting the Army not to “exert extraordinary efforts” to rescue him from the Taliban.

Captain Van Patten stated that the California marijuana eradication team found 180 mature plants being grown outdoors during the pot raid where Bergdahl was found. The deputy also maintained that it would not be “out of the question” for someone to be inside the home and not to be aware of the plants. One person was arrested during the pot raid, and another individual in addition to Bergdahl was also detained and later released.
