Cleopatra’s Tomb is believed to have been discovered by Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass in a crumbling temple called Taposiris Magna, 28 miles west of Alexandria.
The temple, located on the side of a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, is a limestone structure that is crumbling in ruins. It’s believed that the body of Queen Cleopatra may lie beneath the ruins.
Zahi Hawass, Egypt’s chief archaeologist, told reporters on a tour of the temple on Sunday:
“This could be the most important discovery of the 21st century,”
The team of 12 archeologists and 70 excavators, Hawass, 60, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, have begun excavating the site and sifting through the derbis.
Ever the optimist, Hawass also hopes to find the remains of Cleopatra’s lover, the fabled Roman general Mark Antony sharing her resting place.
