Knicks guard Jeremy Lin may be the talk of every sports radio and television show in the US in 2012, but he’s not letting the “Linsanity” overcome the country without giving proper credit to who he says it is truly do – God.
During an interview with Brandon Steiner of Steiner Sports sponsored by the New York Times Tuesday in New York, Lin said he “absolutely” believes divine intervention was at work in the birth of “Lin-sanity.”
As the entire country knows by now, the undrafted point guard out of Harvard was cut by two NBA teams before reaching stardom with the New York Knicks.
The 6-3, 200-pound Lin talked about now seeing God’s hand at work throughout the course of his entire life, from being born to two 5-6 immigrant parents from Taiwan to his older brother saving him from drowning at age 5 to the serendipity of making his mark against No. 1 pick John Wall of the Washington Wizards in the NBA Summer League.
Then after Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert got hurt, the struggling Knicks picked up Lin off the garbage bin — igniting a worldwide phenomenon as the NBA’s first Taiwanese-American player led the losing Knicks back into playoff contention.
“I’d like to say I controlled everything everything and did everything right. And that’s why this has happened. But I really can’t. I’d be the first to admit that,” Lin told Steiner.
Giving God the glory is nothing new for Lin. When he was with the Golden State Warriors last year, Lin testified at River of Life Christian Church that he considers everything in his life blessings from God.
“I look back and I realize these are His fingerprints all over my story,” the Christian Post quotes Lin as saying at the time.
The NBA star admitted that initially he was playing for “great games,” getting the next year of contract and for his glory but after spending more time in God’s Word, he said he realized “our true prize … was something in heaven, not on earth.”
“I realize I had to learn … to stop chasing the perishable prizes of this earth … and give my best effort unto God and trust Him with the results.”
