At least four students were hurt when an armed individual entered the cafeteria of Ohio’s Chardon High School and opened fire early Monday according to officials.
The suspected shooter – believed to be a student at Chardon High, according to a school official – was in custody, FBI Special Agent Scott Wilson told reporters.
Local news WKYC reports the four injured students were transported by helicopter to nearby hospitals. Authorities had no immediate information on their conditions nor on the chain of events that transpired early Monday at the High School, located about 35 miles east of Cleveland.
Chardon Police say that gunfire was reported inside the high school cafeteria just after 7:30am.
Students barricaded themselves in classrooms as the school was placed in lockdown.
Once the lockdown ended, students were evacuated from the school five at a time. Joseph Bergant, superintendent of Chardon schools, said high school students were evacuated to Maple Elementary School.
“All of our high school students are now safe,” Bergant said on local television, which was relayed by CNN.
