Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has arrived at federal court. The Thursday court appearance was the first such court hearing scheduled for the accused Boston bomber in 17 months.
Boston federal courthouse security was reportedly enhanced significantly before arrival of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Jury selection in the Boston bombing trial is expected to being on January 5 and last several months.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev defense attorneys are expected to discuss jury selection during the Boston bombing federal court hearing today. Both the prosecution and the defense team have already submitted their sets of proposed questions for potential jurors in the case. The jury pool is reportedly comprised of at least 1,200 individuals.
The Boston bomber suspect’s lawyers have tried to move the murder trial outside of the city and away from the Boston Marathon site, but have been unsuccessful in doing so. If convicted of the bombing attack, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could receive the death penalty.
Boston bombing prosecutors believe that Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, “planted and detonated two pressure-cooker bombs near the marathon finish line” when the annual race was held on April 15, 2013. More than 260 Boston Marathon spectators and runners were injured, and three people were killed by the pressure-cooker bombs.
Tamerlan Tsarnae was killed during a police shootout the day after the Boston bombing. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding inside a boat in a backyard in Watertown the day after his fellow Boston bomber suspect and brother was killed. The younger of the Tsarnaev brothers was wounded and ultimately surrendered without incident.
When the judge in the Boston bombing case asked Tsarnaev if he was satisfied with his defense team’s legal representation, the Boston bombing suspect reportedly said, “Very much.”
