Seven people in Japan have fallen ill after eating blowfish balls.

Blowfish, known as fugu in Japan is a local delicacy with a nasty catch: not processed correctly, it can, and does kill people. Blowfish poisoning scars were common in Japan until 1983 when the Government introduced laws that only licensed chefs with the correct expertise could serve the fish.

Around 3 people die each year in Japan from eating the fish.

The victims were treated for numbness and other symptoms, with one in a critical condition. The restaurant was not licensed to serve blowfish, and is being investigated by police for professional negligence resulting in injuries.
