It’s official. A “Starship Troopers” reboot is on its way, meaning giant insects will make their return to the big screen sometime in the near future.
According to report by Vulture , Neal Moritz, the producer of “Fast Five” and “I Am Legend,” has decided to remake Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 sci-fi classic, and has even hired Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class) to write the script.
The original ‘Starship Troopers’ film, based loosely on the 1959 military science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his exploits in the futuristic Mobile Infantry military unit. Rico’s military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnid-like alien species called “Bugs.”
The IBTimes pointed out that following Friday’s news of the remake, Twitter has been bursting with reactions from “Starship Troopers” fans.
“Why in God’s holy name does the world need a STARSHIP TROOPERS remake? The movie isn’t even 15 years old,” wrote one user.
“A remake of Starship Troopers is on the way… the original was a cult classic and I think should not be touched,” wrote another.
Despite mixed reviews from movie critics, the original “Starship Troopers” went on to make more than $121 million at the box office worldwide in 1997.
The film was also nominated for a visual effects Academy Award the following year, and has since developed a strong cult following.
