Ellen DeGeneres and Mariah Carey are receiving kudos from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s (GLAAD) for being among the first celebrities to champion Spirit Day. The annual event is designed to encourage supporters to wear purple in recognition of the need to raise awareness about homophobic bullying among young people, noted Contact Music .

Mariah used her Twitter platform to share her support for Spirit Day.

Dreams are hard to follow, but don’t let anyone tear them away’. Stand against bullying! #SpiritDay

And while other celebrities joined Mariah and Ellen in championing Spirit Day, Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox stood out by turning on purple lights at the Empire State Building in New York.

Matt Kane, director of Entertainment Media for GLAAD, expressed his appreciation to the stars who used their social media platforms to show their support.

“Joining earlier stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Mariah Carey were Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Jim Parsons, Allison Janey, Anna Faris, Sean Hayes, Teri Polo, Debra Messing, and many others,” said Kane.

Demi Lovato tweeted her own photo in violet in response to the purple theme of the day.

Let’s show LGBT youth we’ve got their backs. Stand up against bullying for # spiritday ! http://glaad.org/spiritday

Ellen DeGeneres urged her 33.1 million followers to show their support not just on October 16 but throughout the year.

It’s # SpiritDay ! Make sure to be kind to one another today, and then do it again tomorrow, and then the next day, and then the next…

While Mariah was one of the first celebrities to champion Spirit Day, she’s also engrossed in her world concert, tweeting throughout her tour.

Hi Seoul, thank you for the nice welcome!! #Lambily, #nowplaying “I know you got Soul!” heehee (NTT)

Mariah Carey is seeking to keep her tweets positive, despite getting some negative feedback from critics, as the Inquisitr pointed out. Wendy Williams criticized the singer’s attire.

Mariah is 44, struggling at youth; struggling to stay relevant. She has been ridiculed before for dressing inappropriate. Not some days, but all the time.

At the same time, Mariah is receiving positive reviews for her album Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse , but disappointing sales, noted the Idolator .

Def Jam’s new CEO Steve Bartels sought to analyze the reasons.

Sometimes an artist — and in the case of Mariah, an artist I’ve worked with for 10 years — makes an amazing album that just doesn’t connect with the audience. Of course that is very disappointing, but it would be impossible to pinpoint that down to just one thing. I’ve enjoyed incredible success with Mariah and many of those hit songs and albums have made Billboard history. But this latest effort just didn’t go all the way.
