The first production 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to be offered to the public was sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas last weekend for $250,000 with the proceeds benefiting the YMCA of Southern Nevada.
The winning $250k bid was placed by Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, a successful NASCAR team that employs star drivers including Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.
According to MotorTrend, Hendrick will take delivery of the 69th ZL1 coupe (to commemorate the 1969 Camaro ZL1, of which only 69 were ever produced), the only one painted in Carbon Flash Metallic, in winter 2012.
“Offering the 69th Camaro ZL1 at auction was a fitting tribute to the 1969 model, and a great way to benefit such a worthy cause as the YMCA,” said Chevrolet performance cars marketing director Russ Clark.
Whereas the 1969 Camaro ZL1 packed an all-aluminum, 427 cubic-inch V-8 rated for 430 hp, the 2012 ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 good for 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. It also will have modern-day performance credentials like adaptive dampers, an active exhaust, and Brembo brakes.
Chevrolet has yet to announce an official retail price for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which goes on sale in spring 2012, but early estimates are in the range of $47,000.
In addition to the ZL1 coupe, Autonet reported that Mr. Hendrick also bought the first new 2010 Camaro (VIN 0001) – paying $350,000, which all went to the American Heart Association – and 2011 Camaro convertible, as well as the first Chevrolet Volt (forwarding 100s of 1,000s of dollars to local and national charities, in the process).
