Box Office Report: ‘If I Stay’ Tops ‘Guardians,’ But Will It Remain No. 1?

Looks like despite the poor reviews, If I Stay topped Friday’s box office . The teen tearjerker starring promising young actress Chloë Moretz pulled in a lot of fanfare on Friday with $6.8 million on opening. At No. 2 was Guardians of The Galaxy with $4.8 million. Will If I Stay be the victor at the box office? It certainly looks that way.

Although one can argue that Guardians of The Galaxy isn’t going anywhere, it’s been out for a bit now, and the die-hard fans, and any new audience members, have likely seen the movie at this point. We’re sure it will still be a top earner for weeks to come, but If I Stay’s demographic is going out in droves to see this one, or at least that’s what it seems. It makes sense considering the last teen tearjerker, The Fault in Our Stars , was very profitable, but like Guardians , The Fault in Our Stars has also been at the box office for a number of weeks.

If I Stay is about a girl named Mia Hall who enters a coma after getting into a very serious car accident. Most of the film sees Mia in an out of body state as she decides if she will “stay” for her friends or family, and live a completely different life than before, or abandon her body.

Here’s what some people are saying about If I Stay :

If I stay and stay still literally just meshed and I’m not okay. Like wtf I’m still crying this is not okay

“ @caitnwatkins : save y’all’s money If I Stay was garbage”

If you wanna cry a lot if I stay is for you

two times during if i stay I couldn’t contain my laughter I hate myself

At No. 3 is the poorly received Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with $4.54 million. Although domestically the film made $133 million, it’s still not up to snuff with the original Turtles .

Unfortunately with the Ferguson shooting, Let’s Be Cops really picked a bad week to come out in theaters. While buddy cop films have had a resurgence with hits like Ride Along and 22 Jump Street , it’s safe to say that no one wanted to see a movie about cops, which brings the Fox comedy in at No. 4 for its second week with an abysmal $3.2 million. In total it has earned $17 million.

Coming in at No. 5 is When The Game Stands Tall at $3.0 million. We’ll update you on the box office report for the weekend when the numbers come in on Sunday.
