Demi Lovato recently revealed that she’s battling bipolar disorder, a problem she reportedly treats with medication.

Although the singer said she’s worried about being vulnerable in the public eye, this doesn’t stop Lovato from opening up about her personal struggles. During her recent interview with Cosmopolitan For Latinas , Demi discussed how she treats her bipolar disorder.

“It’s a daily thing. I treat it with medication. Not everybody does that, but for me it works. That’s what works for me — medicating, checking in with people, being honest, and being grateful for things,” Lovato told the publication.

In addition to bipolar disorder, Demi Lovato also struggled with addiction. She told the magazine that she decided to celebrate her 21st birthday by visiting a charity in Kenya . The singer admitted that this wasn’t how she imagined celebrating the milestone when she was younger.

“I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday. I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I’d get s***-faced and go crazy. But I realized that there’s so much more to life than that,” she explained.

One major reason Demi Lovato decided to get her life back on the right track was to serve as an inspiration for her younger sister. The singer told Cosmopolitan for Latinas that she wants to set a good example these days.

“When I was younger, I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world. And because I didn’t have that, I realized I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister,” Demi said.

She added, “I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, but I definitely want to win a Grammy one day, and I dream of winning an Oscar. I want to continue to tour and build my fan base and make music that will last for decades.”

However, just because Lovato is willing to share this sort of personal information with the world doesn’t mean she’s entirely comfortable with the situation. The Inquisitr previously reported that the singer is a little about how people will perceive her vulnerability .

“I have the same worries and fears that everyone does. I’m afraid of spiders. I’m afraid of changing my hair and hating it. I’m afraid of being vulnerable in front of the world. I’m a warrior. People think that I’ve got myself together, but I’m actually still a work in progress,” she explained.
