Captain America 3 may not square off against Batman vs. Superman at the box office after all. According to reports, Disney is rethinking the release date for the superhero’s next adventure.
Movie geeks around the planet were more than a little shocked when they discovered the studio planned to open the next Captain America adventure on the same day Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up hits the big screen. Considering Cap’s most recent cinematic excursion made a ton of money at the box office, many people wondered which flick would emerge victorious.
Rumors surrounding Disney’s problem with the current Captain America 3 release date arrived courtesy of Variety scribe Brent Lang’s Twitter feed. In addition to dropping some news about Star Wars: Episode VII and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 , Lang revealed that Captain America’s next adventure may not hit the big screen as originally planned.

Moving Captain America 3 out of the May 2016 release date is probably a very good idea. While the movie could pull a significant amount of revenue away from Batman vs. Superman , this writer believes the movie would have a hard time topping the Man of Steel sequel. While Captain America certainly has his own loyal fanbase, most casual moviegoers are more familiar with Batman and Superman than Marvel’s superhero.
The Inquisitr previously reported that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had no intention of bumping Captain America 3 from its May 6, 2016 release date since Disney had that day staked out first. Since Captain America: The Winter Soldier quickly became one of Marvel’s more successful cinematic endeavors, it’s not surprising that the studio would want to ensure its continued success.
According to Box Office Mojo , the acclaimed $170 million sequel has amassed $213 million in the US alone . The film also earned a whopping $405 million from foreign audiences, a figure that effectively pushes its worldwide total to an astounding $618 million. It’s doubtful Disney could achieve this sort of success if Captain America 3 squared off against Batman vs. Superman on the same weekend.
Of course, just because Disney is “struggling” with the idea of releasing the next Captain America flick against such a mighty franchise doesn’t mean the studio will ultimately back down. There’s a good chance Marvel could use the opportunity to see just how well its properties stand against those crafted by the folks at DC Comics and Warner Bros.
