Pizza Hut To Start Feeding Customers By The Slice

Pizza Hut will begin peddling its wares by the slice in a handful of markets.

Since it’s often hard to convince folks to spend money on an entire pizza when they only have an hour for lunch, the restaurant will begin feeding customers by the slice. Pizza Hut recently opened two locations in Nebraska and Rhode Island devoted to testing the market.

If Pizza Hut strikes gold with the by-the-slice model, then fans of the chain should expect locations to begin slinging slices instead of just whole pies. Spokesman Doug Terfehr told Bloomberg that they want to gauge customer interest before offering slices in other areas.

Terfehr explained:

“We wanted to test these in cities where people work and live, as well as locations that were quite different from one another. Our heritage is in the Midwest, so we wanted to get a sense for how that consumer would respond. And pizza by a slice is more common on the East Coast, so we wanted an idea of how consumers who already enjoy pizza this way would think of the concept.”

Pizza Hut will offer slices of its famous product at $2 to $3 a piece. Hungry folks can help themselves to a variety of different toppings, including items from its stuffed crust menu. Customers can expect to wait around four minutes for their food to heat up.

Since pizza-slinging competitor Domino’s already has its fingers in the single-slice market, Pizza Hut is hoping to give the company a run for its money. Domino’s reportedly sells pizza by the slice in 50 of its estimated 5,000 locations around the United States.

According to CNN , Pizza Hut selected the Rhode Island an Nebraska locations because the locations were extremely diverse . This will give the company a good understanding of how their customers feel about the proposed by-the-slice model. However, the company stopped short of revealing when they expect to offer single slices to other markets.

One area where Pizza Hut is clearly dominating the competition is in the console market. The Inquisitr previously reported that the restaurant sold a whopping $1 million worth of pizzas through its Xbox 360 app during the first four months of release.

“It’s been a source of unbelievable growth for us. Just the explosion of people who wanted to download it, experiment with it, play with it with Kinect. As soon as we did one, everyone was contacting us to do the next [one],” Terfehr explained during a recent interview.
