The Marines’ ‘girly’ hats scandal has been blamed on President Obama in most reports, but it turns out that particular claim is not true.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , the new design for the Marine Corps hats called the Dan Daly attempted to make the cover more feminine .
The Colbert Report even mocked President Obama for making the Marines’ ‘girly’ hats . But even as I was writing the previous report, this writer had to wonder what the President of the United States was doing getting involved in changing the Marine Corps’ uniforms.
The rumor started because President Obama allegedly wanted the new Marine Corps hats to look the same whether worn by males or females according to an internal memo leaked from the Department of Defense:
“The Marine Corps is being ‘encouraged’ by DoD to standardize on a unisex/universal dress and service cap.”
But who was doing the “encouraging” and whether President Obama was quoted as being directly involved was never specified by any reporters. This Obama rumor apparently started with the New York Post according to the Daily Beast with a reference to an “Obama directive.”
But that still doesn’t make sense since changes to the Marine Corps hats and uniform policies are proposed by the Marine Corps Uniform Board, not President Obama. While it’s possible Obama at one point was asked for his opinion on the matter it still doesn’t matter since General James Amos will make the final decision on the Marine Corps hats design.
But any potential for the Marine Corps’ girly hats scandal remaining alive was blow to bits by the Marine Corps:
“The president in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover. We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding reason: The former manufacturer went out of business. … The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.”
