The El Paso Chihuahuas have just announced their baseball team name and some fans are torn over whether this is a good or bad thing.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , while this breed is not the most popular dog , 36 Chihuahuas were seized from a home in California .
The announcement of the El Paso Chihuahuas was made on Tuesday following a contest where people living in the region were allowed to submit names. The name of El Paso Chihuahuas was picked “based on creativity, marketability, fun, relevance to El Paso’s unique character and the ability to trademark the name.”
“El Pasoans played a significant role in identifying our new team name — they attended focus groups, suggested several hundred different names, and voted in record numbers for all the names.”
The winner of the contest, Shae Vierra, chose the name because of the dog and also because of the Chihuahuan Desert. As the winner Vierra received two season tickets, an El Paso Chihuahuas team jersey, and the opportunity to throw the first pitch on opening night.
The colors for the new baseball team will be red, black, and “Chihuahuas tan.” The team logos will, of course, be depicting snarling Chihuahuas playing baseball with a bone.
El Paso Chihuahuas Team President Alan Ledford called the baseball team name choice a step forward:
“[It is] a celebration of the next step in our organization…. We are proud to present a progressive logo and brand that captures the fun of Minor League Baseball and represents the passion and fierce loyalty for which El Pasoans are known.Our product is one for the entire family. We have a look for everyone…. I hope everyone will embrace this. I know for some, it will take time.”
Some locals are already saying the El Paso Chihuahuas “should have picked another name.” A father of several children pointed out that while the baseball team name is fun it’s still “very stereotypical. It’s all bark, no bite.” But other kids thought the name was “cool.”
