Elijah Wood, who is slated to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit , has reportedly formed a production company that will focus on crafting independent horror films. According to Deadline , the actor put The Woodshed together with Josh C. Waller, director of the upcoming genre flick Raze .

“I’ve been a fan of horror and genre cinema in general since I was a child and have become increasingly passionate about the idea of there being a space in which horror films that take their subject matter and characters seriously could be produced,” Elijah Wood explained. “What was born out of a conversation of our mutual love for the genre and what we felt was lacking in a broad sense, especially from the U.S. market, became The Woodshed.”

The actor’s love and appreciation for the horror genre may have led to his portrayal of the murderous Frank in filmmaker Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac , a remake of William Lustig’s famously gory 1980 slasher. The film, which was recently picked up by IFC Midnight, will reportedly hit select theaters on December 26. After all, you can’t properly celebrate Christmas without a few bloody cinematic murders.

Elijah Wood’s production company, meanwhile, will reportedly kick things off with Curse the Darkness , a zombie film inspired by Haitian voodoo researcher Wade Davis. The movie will reportedly start filming in Florida next February.

Also on-deck at The Woodshed is Keith Fulton and Lou Pepe’s Harrow , a motion picture which explores what happens when a female doctor and a journalist are trapped inside a quarantined town infested with supernatural shenangigans.

According to First Showing , Elijah Wood is staying extremely busy in front of the camera, as well. Next up for the Lord of the Rings alumn is something called Grand Piano , which co-stars John Cusack. In the film, Wood plays a concert pianist who is forced to play the concert of his life after a madman threatens to butcher the musician’s family.

Are you excited about Elijah Wood’s foray into the world of horror?
