An Afghan soldier was shot to death on Sunday after he opened fire on a group of U.S. Marines, killing one member of the armed forces and wounding another. The attack is one of an increasing number of attacks blamed on government forces within their own ranks.
In 2012 alone more almost 20 such attacks have occurred as a U.S.-led coalition has created mistrust amid their Afghan partners.
The United States has promised to pull out forces by 2014 and have been working with Afghan security forces to train the countries soldiers to ensure they can maintain control against militant groups once the United States has completed its exit plan.
In the meantime this most recent shooting occurred against international troops in the Tarkeh Naver which is located in the Marjah district.
That particular region has become a hot bed for US violance after Lance Cpl Edward Dycus was shot in the head by an Afghan soldier while on guard duty on Jan. 31.
Attacks against foreigners who are trying to mentor Afghan security forces is nothing new but the armed forces admit that attacks have grown more deadly in recent years. According to the Associated Press the military reports all attacks in which an American or other foreign soldier is killed by an Afghan in uniform, however they are not required to report violent attacks that do not lead to the death of a soldier or which involve attempted murder with failed results following the attack.
