Scream , the Wes Craven horror franchise that brought teens to the theaters in droves throughout the 90s, is coming to T.V., asking a whole new generation: What’s your favorite scary mo–T.V. series? Now, MTV is bringing Scream to television in a slick, revamped horror series.

And, by the looks of the trailer, Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens may have some serious competition with the arrival of Scream .

For those that want to know, Wes Craven is involved in the television reimagining of his popular Scream series. The horror movie icon is signed on as executive producer. In fact, there are several familiar names behind the camera, but Scream’s on-screen cast features a group of fresh faces, and many of the roles have been recast in the wake of Scream ‘s last minute character updates.

Bella Thorne (starring as Nina Patterson) is joined by Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus (replacing Amy Forsyth in the role of Audrey), and Bobby Campo in the new Scream series. Additionally, one of the most notable Scream revisions inspired the decision to bring in Jason Wiles (Third Watch), replacing Joel Gretsch ( The 4400 ) as Sheriff Clark Hudson. The role of Sheriff Hudson will reportedly be the small screen equivalent of Dwight ‘Dewey’ Riley, played by David Arquette in the Scream films.

Updating the Scream plot for television, the series will revolve around a series of murders that has escalated from cyberbullying, when a YouTube video goes viral. The video dredges up memories of a past killing and secrets the small town would rather leave buried, forcing a small band of students to work together to flush out a new killer.

Some doubt that a Scream series has the steam to keep an audience tuned in week after week, and even MTV’s own Scream trailer points out what most Scream critics are already thinking.

“You can’t do a slasher movie as TV Series.”

Don’t take it from the critics. Ask Sydney Prescott herself. After all, if anyone knows Scream , it’s Wes Craven’s number one scream queen.

“What’s the point, they’re all the same? Some stupid killer stalking some big-breasted girl who can’t act and who is always running up the stairs when she should be going out the front door. It’s insulting.”

Then again, Ryan Murphy has proven Sydney wrong for four years now with American Horror Story and WGN’s Salem draws fans every week, as well. Even Murphy’s Scream Queens , which has yet to start, is drawing buzz for its potential and its taunting teasers. MTV may be able to bring us a hit with Scream , if they keep it unique and original, while still relying on the likeable character traits from the original Scream films.
