‘Fallout 4’ And ‘Skyrim’ Getting PS4 Mods After All, 4K Support for PS4 Pro Too

Whatever hang up between Bethesda Softworks and Sony existed to prevent mods for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition appears to have been resolved. The publisher of both role-playing games announced Thursday that mod support is coming to the PlayStation 4. Additionally, those that make the jump to the PS4 Pro will get to see both titles running at 4K, though not immediately for Fallout .

The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will be the first to receive both mods and 4K support when it launches on October 28. The last-generation game will be rendered in native 4K, meaning it will be more than simply a resolution bump.

Following the release of Skyrim Special Edition , Bethesda will begin work on adding mod and 4K support to Fallout 4 . This is apparently necessary as Skyrim is releasing soon and the developer studio wants to get support working there first before updating the already-released game.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of native 4K support for Fallout 4 on the PS4 Pro. Bethesda does say the game will receive “enhanced lighting and graphics features,” however.

Official mod support was added by Bethesda Softworks for the PC in April of this year, and this was followed by the Xbox One at the end of May. The addition of the console nearly broke the official Bethesda website with 50 times the traffic of the PC mod launch, demonstrating just how much console players have been yearning for the ability to play games with mod support.

As previously covered , Fallout 4 mod support for the PS4 was supposed to launch in beta form at the end of June. This was delayed with no specific reason given. What was known at the time, though, was Sony’s console had file size limits. The PlayStation 4 would only support mods up to just 900 MB , whereas Xbox One owners can add mods up 2 GB in size. There is no word on if the new agreement between Bethesda and Sony will increase the mod file size.

When launched, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition players on the PlayStation 4 can visit the Mods menu in-game to browse and search for mods, choose favorites, post feedback, and install them from within the game. This is essentially the same experience from the Bethesda website but with the added convenience of not having to visit the website to download and install the mod.

The Bethesda website also plays home to a mod section for Fallout 4 and just opened a section for Skyrim . There are a large number of mods available for the former on the PC and Xbox One divided between most popular, latest, highest rated, and most favorited mods. A filter is also available along with the ability to search mods or view the mods that you have downloaded. Mods can be favorited or downloaded directly from the website.

PS4 owners who wish to use Skyrim mods will need to make sure they have a Bethesda.net account set up when the game launches on October 28 or whenever Fallout 4 is updated. You will be required to log into the account to access and install the mods for the console.

“We are excited finally to get modding to our PlayStation fans who have supported us for so long. Modding has been an important part of our games for over 10 years, and we hope to do even more in the coming year for all our players, regardless of platform,” Bethesda wrote.

What do you think of mods coming to the PlayStation 4 for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition with the bonus of 4K support for the PS4 Pro? Sound off in the comments below.
