Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, a frequent Trump critic, mocked the current political tensions and the White House’s response to the Minneapolis crisis after two fatal ICE shootings in his Tuesday monologue.

During a mock “Doomsday Update,” Kimmel referenced the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moving the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds before midnight, joking that the future looked bleak, with “no longer any point in sending children to school.”

The symbolic Doomsday Clock measures how close humanity is to catastrophe. In 2025, it was set at 89 seconds to midnight, which is the closest in its 78-year history. Kimmel also said that new leaders are necessary at this point.

After the first ICE shooting in Minneapolis on January 7, 2025, Jimmy Kimmel said the White House appeared unprepared to handle the massive outrage, which grew further after a second shooting later the same month.

“The White House is scrambling to clean up the mess they made in Minneapolis,” Kimmel said on his show, referring to the incidents in January 2025. The first shooting occurred on January 7, when 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good was shot.

Good, a preschool teacher and a mother, was driving with her wife, Becca, in Minneapolis when she reportedly refused officers’ request to exit the vehicle and attempted to leave.

ICE agent Jonathon Ross fired at Good as bystanders screamed. Despite ongoing protests claiming Good was only trying to escape, Homeland Security said the agent acted in self-defense after Good allegedly tried to injure Ross, who was hospitalized.

According to the BBC, the second shooting followed a few days after the first, occurring on January 24, 2025. This incident heightened community distress. Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, was fatally shot by ICE agents during protests that erupted over the initial shooting, sparking greater nationwide outrage.

Federal officials defended the agent, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stating that Pretti was shot after allegedly brandishing a gun. However, the victim’s family slammed the remarks, saying his firearm was legally owned, had been removed before the shooting, and that video footage shows he was holding a phone, not a firearm.

Several clips of how the nurse was killed have since then circulated on social media with a series of mixed reactions on what really happened and what did not.

According to US media, Kristi Noem requested a detailed Oval Office meeting with Trump after feeling “sidelined” after the second shooting, as she received immense hate. Demonstrators have urged ICE to leave the city

Subsequently, when Good was shot, Kimmel satirized the Trump administration and criticized ICE agents on his show. The Oscar host referenced a comment by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey by presenting related merchandise at the opening of his show that featured the same message directed at ICE and the Trump administration.

Holding up the shirt to cheers from the audience, the host said, “That is a shirt I want to see.” He then added, “To ICE, get the f–k out of Minneapolis. Get the f–k out of all of these cities.”

Many longtime viewers praised Kimmel for addressing national issues, while critics questioned his conduct, especially after the previous show ban following Conservative leader Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

In September 2025, following controversial remarks about Charlie Kirk’s shooting death in Utah, the show was suspended. Five days later, on September 23, it was aired on ABC.
