Kate Middleton has always been a fashion icon and she has seamlessly balanced her royal duties and fashion choices. However, she is making a very subtle shift from how she handles her fashion and in the process of doing so she is breaking a royal rule by stepping away from the fashion limelight.
Kensington Palace has now confirmed that the details of Kate Middleton’s dresses will not be revealed by them. This is quite a significant change from the traditional royal protocol, and while it might seem like a small move, it is actually a calculated move that will have long lasting effects.
The main reason behind Kate deciding to no longer follow this royal protocol of officially revealing the details of her outfits is that she wants to be noticed for the work she does and not for the clothes she wears. A palace source revealed, “There is an absolute feeling that it [her public work] is not about what the princess is wearing. She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting.”
Given the style icon that Kate is, it is obvious that her fashion choices will of course be under the spotlight. However, she no longer wants it to be officially documented as she believes that when one has substance, they do not need to show it off.
Kate had previously also expressed her frustration with the fact that her work often gets overshadowed by the kind of clothes she wears and her fashion sense. A friend of hers had one mentioned to The Times, “She was going out and doing the work she was interested in… and people just talked about what she was wearing.”

Moreover, it should be noted that, besides the media spotlight, Kate’s fashion had a direct impact on the market. As Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News, “Kate’s impact on fashion is valued at approximately £4 billion. Her wardrobe choices result in an immediate sales surge.”
Kate’s move is even more significant because she has always maintained the royal rules and balanced the various aspects of her life, while not going beyond what the monarchy allows. However, she has made a major deviation this time and while it looks like a seemingly small once, it will be significantly impacting her life and work.

Given the fact that Kate wants to live by what she stands for, her move makes sense and she should be lauded for the same. Being a royal is not an easy job and Kate Middleton has been doing it quite wonderfully.
