Elizabethtown, KY – A Kentucky theater has refused to show Lee Daniels’ The Butler because of Hanoi Jane.
The owner of MoviePlace and Showtime Cinemas in Eizabethtown used to train pilots during the Vietnam War and therefore refuses to show the nation’s top film because of Jane Fonda. The actress is still controversial for being one of the most outspoken opponents of the conflict.
Also a Korean War veteran, Ike Boutwell said that he views Fonda as a traitor and has refused to show any of her films in his theaters.
“I trained hundreds of pilots to fly, many of whom Ms. Fonda clapped and cheered as they were shot down,” he said .
In the critically-acclaimed film, Fonda plays former First Lady Nancy Reagan. The unusual casting choice sparked quite a bit of protest while the film was still in production, including one notable Facebook boycott with over 30,000 likes .
At the time, Fonda said that her critics should “get a life” and suggested that her controversial casting might benefit the movie in the long run. “If it creates hoopla, it will cause more people to see the movie… I figured it would tweak the right. Who cares?”
Despite her hard-line liberal politics, Fonda said that she thinks that the real-lief Reagan will be happy with her performance.
“Through a friend, she asked if I can get her a DVD,” Fonda E! News recently. “So I’m trying to get her one. She’ll feel good about it, I think.”
Fonda continued:
“I heard some of her friends who saw the movie… really liked it. They were very pleased.”
