Shortly after his passing, scores of Tom Clancy fans took to social media to remember the acclaimed novelist. The gaming industry also posted reactions to his passing.

Although he started out in the insurance business, Clancy soon discovered that he had a knack for writing tightly-woven spy thrillers. After several publishing houses passed on his first novel The Hunt for Red October — a book he wrote in his spare time — the story eventually found a home at Naval Institute Press.

The book was a surprise success for the Tom Clancy and the publisher when it arrived in 1984. Before long, the author was able to leave the insurance world behind. In addition to writing several best-selling novels, the writer helped out with such notable video games as Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six .

Shortly after news of his passing made headlines, the folks at Ubisoft issued an official statement . The publisher released several of Clancy’s video games over the past ten years.

“We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy’s passing and our condolences go out to his family. Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world,” the company wrote.

The statement continued, “The teams at Ubisoft, especially at the Red Storm Studio, are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with and learned from him, and we are humbled by the opportunity to carry on part of his legacy through our properties that bear his name.”

The official Splinter Cell Twitter account also issued a statement about Tom Clancy’s passing. You can find those tweets and a handful of other reactions below.
