‘Evil Dead’ Remake Hits Blu-Ray, DVD This Summer

Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead is looking to scare up more business on Blu-ray and DVD this summer.

The gore-soaked remake of director Sam Raimi’s horror classic isn’t wasting any time getting to the home video market. Since moviegoers have a notoriously short attention span these days, the flick will hit retail mere months after it debuted in theaters across North America.

Although the movie received mixed reviews — this writer wasn’t thrilled with the endeavor — that didn’t stop Evil Dead from making tons of cash at the box office.

According to the numbers at Box Office Mojo , Alvarez’s remake earned a tidy $54 million at the box office. Worldwide, the flick generated around $92 million in box office receipts. Considering the movie only cost around $17 million to make, the folks at Sony Pictures were understandably excited.

In fact, the film’s success has already prompted the studio to move forward with a sequel. If the director has his way, then the new franchise will meet up with the original series for one giant motion picture experience.

However, the Blu-ray and DVD release of the Evil Dead remake appears to be the theatrical cut of the flick. Alvarez teased earlier this year that the flick was originally slapped with an NC-17 rating due to the extreme levels of violence on-display.

“Was proud of scoring a NC-17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters,” the director said prior to the film’s release.

Unfortunately for fans, this could mean that Sony is looking to double dip down the road. It’s surprising that the studio wouldn’t want to capitalize on the movie’s success by releasing an unrated edition. Keep your eyes peeled for another version at some point in the near future.

Did you catch the Evil Dead remake in theaters earlier this year? Are you planning to pick up a copy on Blu-ray and DVD on July 16?
