Chardon, OH – The TJ Lane murder trial has indefinitely been delayed. The 18-year-old Ohio teen has been charged with the three shooting deaths of his classmates. Cleveland judge David Fuhry ruled on Monday that the trial will not begin next week as scheduled.
Judge Fuhry noted during hearing that the group will meet again in late January to discuss a new Chardon High School shooting trial date, according to the Huffington Post . The delay was approved at the request of both the attorneys tasked with prosecuting TJ Lane and the teenager’s defense team.
New evidence in the Chardon High School shooting case was noted as the reason for the Ohio mass shooting trial delay. Details about the new evidence which could impact the TJ Lane trial was not divulged during the hearing.
The Ohio school shooting occurred last year on February 27. Geauga County Prosecutor James Flaiz stated that law enforcement officers are waiting for forensic examination reports, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer . TJ Lane defense attorneys Mark DeVan and Ian Friedman declined to comment about the either the Chardon High School shooting trial delay of the new evidence.
TJ Lane was indicted on two counts of attempted aggravated murder, three counts of aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault. If The Chardon teenager is convicted on the Ohio mass shooting charges, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Lane cannot be subjected to the death penalty due to a US Supreme Court ruling that executing convicted murderers for crimes committed as a juvenile is unconstitutional.
