The proposed Oz the Great and Powerful sequel won’t feature Dorothy.

Many fans have wondered where the focus will shift for the sequel that’s currently coming together over at Disney. Although the film will continue to focus on the magical land of Oz, a little girl by the name of Dorothy won’t appear in the follow-up .

Some people have speculated that the Oz the Great and Powerful sequel will be a remake of The Wizard of Oz . In an attempt to squash rumors before they get out of control, producer Joe Roth has addressed where the series is headed next.

While he didn’t give too many details about the project, Roth said that the film “would absolutely not” feature Dorothy . Fans who were hoping to glimpse the Wizard of Oz heroine will have to wait for another installment.

Scribe Mitchell Kapner said that the Oz the Great and Powerful sequel would take place 20 years before Dorothy arrived on the scene. He added, “A lot can happen in that time.”

While the cast of Sam Raimi’s box office hit have agreed to return for the follow-up, it would seem that the Evil Dead director isn’t as enthusiastic about putting together a sequel.

“I haven’t planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture,” the director told Bleeding Cool . “I tried to make it a complete ending, so that the audience would be fulfilled, but I also let Evenora and Theodora get away.”

Although the director’s departure certainly isn’t the sort of news Disney wants to hear, at least the cast is ready and willing to jump on-board for the sequel . James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Mila Kunis have all expressed interest in returning.

Oz the Great and Powerful had an amazing debut last weekend. The film brought in around $79 million in the US alone. The feature also earned around $69 million in foreign markets. The fact that Disney is looking to get a sequel going as soon as possible isn’t altogether surprising.

Did you catch Oz the Great and Powerful in theaters? Are you disappointed that Dorothy won’t appear in the next movie?
