While most expectant mothers have perused the list of most popular baby names , fewer have checked out the list of most outrageous. Below are the 12 most extraordinary names of 2012 :

Blue: When Beyonce and Jay-Z named their daughter Blue Ivy, they actually petitioned to trademark her unique name. Their request was denied. Other interesting color names of the year include Silver, Violet, and — of course — Grey, of the erotic “50 Shades.”

Katniss: With the rise of the popular Hunger Games, Katniss attracted the most views of any name of Nameberry in 2012 . However, the site predicts that actual babies will more likely be named after minor characters, such as Rue, Primrose, and Cato.

Hashtag: We’ve all read the story of the Jamesons, who named their little girl Hashtag. While last year introduced babies Like and Facebook to the world, Hashtag is this year’s social media baby. Although, no one ever confirmed that the couple actually named their baby after the Twitter symbol, and many are betting that the whole idea was a joke. But with tech-inspired names like Apple and Siri, Hashtag really isn’t too far of a stretch.

Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence: Uma Thurman took three months to publicly announce her daughter’s name. Now we all know why. The baby is called Luna for short.

Zamzam: The name that best represents the spirit of the 2012 London Olympics. The name Zamzam has already made the top 100 list for girl names. Although she came in dead last, Somali runner Zamzam won hearts by representing her war-torn nation. She refused to break her Ramadan fast for the competition. Her name comes from a famous holy well in Mecca.

Maxwell: While not a new or even extremely unique name, Jessica Simpson made it so by naming her daughter Maxwell. Simpson’s daughter is named Maxwell Drew, called Maxi for short. Actress Lindsay Sloane named her daughter Maxwell Lue.

Beretta: As in, a gun. The newborn daughter of Bristol Palin’s baby daddy Levi Johnston named his daughter Breeze Beretta. Other badass names of the year include Rebel, Shooter, Gunner, and Blade.

Kingsolomon: Among babies on the US extended popularity list are five boys names Kingsolomon. They are accompanied by Kingdavid, Princemichael, Sircharles, and Milady.

Vanellope: The newest Disney princess sports the outrageous name Vanellope von Schweetz. Voiced by Sarak Silverman, the newest princess on “Wreck it Ralph” is a mash-up of Vanilla and Penelope.

Mykale, Linzi, Payzlee: When parents are set on popular names but want some form of uniqueness, spelling is the first thing to change. Why have a boy named Michael when he could be named Mykale? Izayah, Joyani, Leigha, and Kyndall are other popular alternate-spelling monikers.

Sabbath: The father of little Sabbath Page didn’t name her for religious reasons. She’s the daughter of hard rocker Zakk Wylde, and named after the heavy metal band Black Sabbath.

Kick: As in, “Don’t kick your brother!” Actor Jeremy Sisto named his son Bastian Kick. Allegedly he found the name looking through the dictionary for “words that aren’t normally names.” I wonder what little Bastian Kick was doing in the womb to make this word stick out to his parents.

What’s the most unusual name you’ve heard this year? The most common?
