Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Xperia Arc Heading To Rogers Wireless

It’s official! The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Xperia Arc are coming exclusively to Rogers in Canada.

The first unit, the Xperia PLAY combines PlayStation portable gaming with Google Android 2.3, super cool graphics and dedicated game controls, while the Xperia arc features a more slimmed down design with Android 2.3 and the same type of graphics and dedicated gaming controls.

The Rogers deal will see the phones become a Canadian exclusive for the company, while making them one of the first carriers in the world to experience the Sony gaming phone line.

According to Raj Doshi, Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Rogers Communications, Inc:

“Connecting people to the things they are passionate about is what we do. Whether it’s watching the latest episode of your favourite show or beating your gaming high score, we are always looking for game changers that connect our customers to more of the things that matter to them, when they want, wherever they are,” while adding, “Together with Sony Ericsson, and backed by the amazing power of Android, we believe the Xperia PLAY and Xperia arc are going to revolutionize mobile gaming and entertainment experiences for Canadians and we’re excited our customers will have exclusive access to them.”

The phones are expected to be available Spring 2011.

I’m not sure how much I’m buying into the “handheld gaming system as Smartphone” thing yet, especially with some very cool games costing next to nothing for iOS and Android systems.

What do you think, are you ready to give a Sony handheld gaming/smartphone platform a try?
