Pedro Martinez To Write Tell-All Memoir About His Playing Days

Pedro Martinez has some great stories to tell.

The former pitching ace has signed a book deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to write about his 18-year playing career that included three Cy Young Awards and more than 200 wins.

The book, titled Pedro, promises to tell “lively, raw stories” from his time in the league, the publisher noted.

Martinez spent time with the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets during his career. He is most known for his time with Boston, in which he helped lead to the team to its first World Series title in more than 80 years, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to the New York Yankees in the ALCS to do so.

Pedro Martinez came from an unusual mold for a power pitcher. He was listed at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, though he is believed to be somewhat smaller on both measurements. Despite his slight size, Martinez was able to overpower batters with his array of pitches, and he ended his career with the best ERA of any starting pitcher in MLB history.

“There has never been a pitcher in baseball history — not Walter Johnson, not Lefty Grove, not Sandy Koufax, not Tom Seaver, not Roger Clemens — who was more overwhelming than the young Pedro,” wrote Sports Illustrated’s Joe Posnarski.

Since his playing career ended, Martinez has found his way back to the Boston Red Sox, serving as special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington.

“I’ve been away long enough now,” Pedro Martinez told ESPN. “I spent time with my family, and now the situation is right. I think they need people like me that could probably relate to the players, relate to the front office, have the good communication and the interest that they need right now.”

Pedro Martinez will write the memoir with the Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman, and it will be published sometime next year.
