Barbara Walters Apologizes For Throwing Shade At Katy Perry

Barbara Walters apologized to Katy Perry on The View Monday for “shading” the pop star in a 2011 interview.

In a recent cover story for Billboard, 28-year-old Perry explained that the interview for Walters’ annual “Most Fascinating People” list came right at the end of her marriage to Russell Brand.

“I shouldn’t have done the interview… I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed,” she said. Perry said she told everyone she was running late, but Walters was still upset when she arrived. The only other person that had ever made her wait was Judy Garland.

Perry wasn’t offended by Walters’ comment, but that she couldn’t have explained what she was going through.

“I think it’s the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me,” she said. “I just couldn’t tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break.'”

Perry also confessed that she contemplated suicide after the divorce.

Walters had no idea that Perry was heading for divorce at the time of the interview and apologized to the “Roar” singer on Monday’s edition of The View.

“Katy, if I made you feel at all unhappy, during a time when you were obviously unhappy, and I didn’t know, I’m sorry, but you can’t always know,” Walters said.

Barbara Walters announced her retirement in May, and said that she would be leaving The View and ABC News in the summer of 2014. The 84-year-old veteran journalist said that she wasn’t retiring because of her health, and that she was “fine” after suffering from an illness and injury earlier this year.

“I am not leaving because I am in ill health … I’m now fine. I had the chickenpox, which is ridiculous,” Walters explain. “I had never had it when I was a child, but I hugged someone who had shingles. I fell and got bloodied. It was not the chickenpox that was scary, it was the concussion.”
