Metal Gear Solid games making high-def return to PS3

Giving old games a HD makeover has become a popular tactic on the PlayStation 3.

I’d complain about the ruthless repackaging of titles we’ve already played, except (a) face it, slicker graphics really do make a difference and (b) the choices for these facelifts have been excellent: God of War, Sly Cooper, Prince of Persia, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus all deserved an upgrade.

Next, according to sources connected to CVG, are the first three Metal Gear Solid games. The site is reporting that the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine confirms the new HD Metal Gears, but stops short of telling us more.

I’m guessing that the “first three” games are the PSone original from 1998, PS2 sequel Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty from 2002, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater from 2004.

While the series has a tendency to disappear up its own arse with cut-scenes that last several months at a time, there’s no denying that they’re brilliantly cinematic, stylish, and mostly fun. I still prefer the grainy-as-hell PSone original, so to see that in high-def will be a treat. So long as they don’t pull this Metal-Gear-Solid-is-Die-Hard-4 bullshit again.
