‘Jaws’ Reboot Might Be In The Works At Universal

Here’s a rumor that is sure to ruffle more than a few feathers: Universal could be moving forward with a reboot of Jaws in the very near future.

Director Steven Spielberg’s classic shark flick is considered to be the very first summer blockbuster. When it opened in theaters back in the 70s, the movie earned a whopping $260 million. That’s a hefty chunk of change for 1975.

Rumors about a Jaws reboot have been popping up for years now, though nothing about the project has ever been confirmed by the folks at Universal. However, a recent job listing on Mandy suggests that the studio might be moving forward with the remake.

Before you start lighting torches and planning a protest outside of Universal Studios, it’s worth noting that this listing could be nothing more than a prank. Since people get upset whenever someone mentions rebooting Jaws, it could be a joke designed to completely ruin your day.

Here’s what the job description says:

We are seeking all crew positions for the upcoming Jaws reboot. We will need to build sets quite early therefore we will be hiring partially prior to the official pre-production. Please submit all job queries via flickfolks.com in the US Film Crew Section. Please leave a message there directly with the studio PM (production manager)

According to the Mandy listing, the flick will begin production this January. Has the unexpected popularity of Sharknado and Discovery Shark Week given the suits at Universal a very bad idea? It will be interesting to see how this rumor unfolds.

Since Hollywood seems determined to remake everything under the sun — this writer is still fuming about RoboCop and Poltergeist — the studio could very well be plotting a remake of Spielberg’s beloved shark movie. If this job listing is real, then producers should prepare for immediate fan backlash.

What do you think about the Jaws reboot? Is this a prank or has Universal lost its mind?
