Chelsea’s Eden Hazard in action against AC Milan in New Jersey

Chelsea defeated AC Milan 2-0 in a high-tempo friendly in front of a large crowd at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

The match was the second semi-final of the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup.

Chelsea started brightly and it came as little surprise when Kevin De Bryune put them ahead in the 29th minute.

Belgium’s Eden Hazard completed a slick run at Milan’s defenders by laying the ball off to his team-mate, who accepted the pass with a first time strike into the bottom corner that left goalkeeper Christian Abbiati in no-man’s land.

Milan improved in the second half after both sides deployed substitutions, with Frenchman M’Baye Niang in particular coming close to finding an equalizer on several occasions.

This being a pre-season friendly, players began to tire heavily towards the end of the match, which led to some frenetic end-to-end plays.

Andre Schurlle secured the win for Chelsea two minutes into injury time, taking a pass from Victor Moses and slotting the ball inside the right post.

Chelsea’s victory sets up an intriguing final against Real Madrid, who had already secured a spot in the final with a 2-1 win over Everton in Los Angeles.

After three years of marriage and in a somewhat bitter divorce, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho departed charge of the Spanish giants this summer.

He would not have expected to face his former employers so soon, exhibition match or not, but after the game he played down the significance of the forthcoming fixture.

“I think it’s best for us [Chelsea] because we want to play the best teams,” he said.

Judging by his own team’s impressive pre-season form, Mourinho may have little to fear from any potential grudge match.
