Disk no longer required for Netflix streaming on Wii

Netflix subscribers who wish to stream Netflix content to their Wii no longer need a special disk to do so, as an app has been made available in the Wii Shop Channel to enable streaming without the disk.

A few weeks back, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company is considering offering American customers the same “streaming only” option available to Canadian subscribers, but did not elaborate on when that could occur. The president of Nintendo America commented on the popularity of the streaming option before it went disc-free, and their expectations about the service now that a disc is no longer required:

“This simplified Netflix access will help bring families together more quickly, more easily and in more ways than ever before,” Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president, said in a statement. “More than 3 million Wii systems have already connected to Netflix, demonstrating how easy the service is to set up and use.”

In addition to Wii users, PS3 owners also have access to a new, disc-free streaming option.
