Hungarian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton’s First Win This Season

Lewis Hamilton, starting from pole position, won The Hungarian Grand Prix today. This ended a frustrating string of failures this season.

Kimi Raikkonen took second place, and Sebastian Vettel finished third.

This was Hamilton’s first year driving for Mercedes and, due to his previous poor performances, he did not expect to succeed. After the race Hamilton said: ‘This is probably one of the most important Grand Prix wins of my career…. The guys have done an exceptional job, I really couldn’t be happier. I hope there are many more to come.”

This win makes it 22 times that he has stood on the winners rostrum in Grand Prix races. Now he is fourth overall in the drivers’ rankings but has virtually no chance of catching up with Vettel who has 172 points. Kimi Raikkonen, the Finnish driver, has 134 points and Fernando Alonso is on 135.

Hamilton displayed some rare emotion after the race; he kissed his Mercedes, hugged team boss Ross Brawn, and indicated to his teammates that he wanted to share the victory with them. This contrasted with his demeanor during the race when he had some disagreement with a pit engineer, shouting over his radio, ”Hey man, I’m trying to drive here. I’m happy with the way the car is.”

Nico Rosberg, number two driver for the Mercedes team, had to abandon the race when the rear of his car caught fire; he was unhurt. Vettel and Raikkonen had a fierce battle for position and almost collided near the end of the race.

Following a number of spectacular tire blowouts this year, Pirelli made great efforts to ensure there would be no repeat of these close calls. Their strategy was to use tires from last year, with some compounds from this year. The plan seemed to work and there were no major incidents in this Hungarian Grand Prix.
