‘The Conjuring’ Scores $3.3 Million On Thursday Night

James Wan’s The Conjuring scored $3.3 million from moviegoers on Thursday night.

The film tells the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two real-life supernatural investigators who help a family deal with some seriously frightening situations taking place inside a seclude farmhouse.

Thanks to Wan’s reputation as a successful scaremonger, The Conjuring is already off to a solid start. According to The Wrap, the horror flick managed to scare up $3.3 million in ticket sales from Thursday evening and midnight showings.

Although analysts believe the $20 million fright flick could earn around $25 million by the time Monday rolls around, the website points out that The Conjuring is currently on the same track as Universal’s The Purge. That film went on to make a tidy $34 million in just three days.

Despite the horror genre’s storied past with critics, Wan’s creepy tale seems to be getting some very strong reviews. The picture’s Rotten Tomatoes score is a very health 84 percent. The audience score is a little better; 91 percent of moviegoers said they enjoyed the flick.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan’s latest endeavor is doing extremely well when compared to the numbers posted by the Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges action flick R.I.P.D.. The movie only managed to earn an incredibly low $773,000 on Thursday evening.

The Men in Black-style outing will likely bring home around $15 million over the weekend. Considering the flick cost around $130 million to produce, this isn’t the sort of business Universal Pictures was hoping to generate.

As of this writing, Thursday evening and midnight numbers for director Dean Parisot’s star-studded sequel Red 2 were not available. The film features a number of familiar faces including Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
