John Oliver Breaks ‘The Daily Show,’ Does Aaron Sorkin Interview With Handheld Cameras [Video]

By most accounts, John Oliver is doing a fantastic job as Jon Stewart’s replacement on The Daily Show. Well, at least until last night when he basically broke the show.

Oliver was forced to do his interview with Aaron Sorkin, the creator of the HBO show Newsroom, without any power.

At the start of the segment Oliver explained that there was some sort of explosion that basically cut off power to the entire studio.

Oliver said: “At the end of the last segment, basically the studio exploded… We lost all power to cameras and monitors, and it seems I’ve now officially broken The Daily Show.”

Sorkin was a good sport and sat in the dark with Oliver as they “played” a clip from the Newsroom. Oliver said that the studio didn’t have the power to actually show the clip to the studio audience but that it would be edited in before the program aired on cable.

Sorkin, whose new show is all about covering the news, did make fun of Oliver for running such a shoddy news program. Oliver tried to defend himself, but given the circumstances, had to “concede defeat.”

Oliver was also forced to improvise the show’s “moment of zen.” Instead of playing a humorous news clip from the week, Oliver did a little dance at hummed the Daily Show theme song.

And here’s your moment of zen.
