John Oliver Mocks GOP Response To DOMA Decision [Video]

John Oliver is the new host of The Daily Show , and has been racking up a number of plaudits for his mocking, take-no-prisoners style.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act this week, Republican lawmakers, officials and pundits blasted the judicial branch for interpreting the constitution to determine what laws are “O-K” and what laws potentially violate the vision for America set forth by the Founding Fathers (read: what they’re supposed to do).

The Daily Show ‘s Oliver took Republican officials to task over their response to the Supreme Court’s DOMA and Prop 8 rulings , implying that the GOP as a whole is pretty obtuse to how checks and balances are supposed to work.

“The whole point of the Supreme Court is to keep us in check. Sometimes we as a nation make bad decisions.” Oliver said.

He also specifically pointed out Congressman Louis Gohmert’s response, that the Supreme Court’s decision goes against nature. Oliver humorously poured cold water on that notion by showing what nature’s idea of sex is (you’ll have to see it for yourself in the video).

Oliver also noted an important question about anti-gay rights politicians, and their argument that the legalization of gay marriage will lead to nonhuman marriages.

“What is it with these people and animals?” he asked.

Oliver’s stint as The Daily Show ‘s interim host has drawn a lot of media attention since he officially started earlier this month. His style is markedly different from Stewart’s, but he still maintains the same tempestuous outrage at bizarre political reports that the show is known for.

A bearded Stewart Skyped in for a recent episode, and when all of the joking was set aside, he assured Oliver that was doing a “phenomenal job” in his absence.
