‘Deadpool’ Game Big On Charm, Low On Substance

Deadpool, the game, has plenty of charm, but the substance is lacking.

The game based on one of Marvel’s most charismatic characters, the merc with the mouth, has arrived today on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It may not be much for those looking for depth, but the humor is, um, dead on.

If you happened to catch the launch trailer yesterday, right here on The Inquisitr, Deadpool showed off the “Bang, babes and mayhem” we should expect from his game, and it was a hilarious trailer at that. One thing the critics seemed to agree on was that the game wasn’t very long or challenging.

Daniel Way teamed up with High Moon Studios to give us the long-awaited game based on Deadpool with all of the playability of the Transformers titles and the wit of the aforementioned comedy writer. The story follows the merc with the mouth as he is contracted to kill reality show creator Chance White, but Mister Sinister mucks things up and loses him the contract. As a result, Deadpool decides to go after the super villain instead, and hilarity ensues. Deadpool knows he’s the star and he milks it for all it’s worth.

The humor in Deadpool teems with humor that can get downright gross, like in one part where he’s literally taking a dump and refers to his droppings as a “stink pickle.” While juvenile, the jokes are well-written, so you won’t find a lot of fifth grade potty jokes here. The titular character will talk directly to the player, rant on the developers if he sees something he doesn’t like, and regularly remind you of how aware he is that he’s in a video game.

However, the balance between guns and swords doesn’t quite feel right as the game tries to go both ways in a less than smooth fashion. The broken camera and floaty platforming sequences seem to work for Mister Sinister as you fight them almost harder than you do any of the opponents you face in the game.

Deadpool is funny, but short, and the challenge isn’t where it should be. Fans might love it, but long-term gamers will most likely leave it at their local GameStop in exchange for something with more substance.
