Facebook is 86ing gifts app

If you’re one of the people who use Facebook’s “Gifts” application, you’ll have to find other imaginary things to send your Facebook friends starting August 1st, as the virtual trinkets app is being discontinued.

The discontinuation of the Gifts app is interesting as it seems like it could be a bit of a moneymaker if promoted more, but Facebook says they want to put their efforts into developing other products:

“Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of the people who have given millions of gifts, but we made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts.

We’ll be able to focus more on improving and enhancing products and features that people use every day, such as Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the ‘Like’ button and the Wall.”

Mashable points out that since the app had the option to use “Facebook Credits,” it must have been pretty unpopular to get axed by the social networking giant.

Have you ever gifted someone a virtual thing on Facebook? Was the app lacking something obvious to interest Facebook’s millions of users in spending real money on imaginary items?
