‘The Last of Us’ Deserves Your Pre-Order, Say Critics

The Last of Us may not be out yet, but it deserves your pre-order, according to critics. This game is set for release June 14 on PlayStation 3.

The latest in the zombie bashing game genre, The Last of Us takes the strong points from the mega-hit Dead Island and its sequel and adds stealth and a storyline that actually engages the player. The story behind it is that a deadly fungus has spawned an epidemic of the undead and the US government has created a strictly regulated safety zone for the survivors. Joel is a grizzled veteran who has made a promise to take a teenage girl, Ellie, out of the safety zone, through a landscape filled with the undead and cannibals, and into a bunker for a resistance force.

In spite of previous doubts, The Last of Us turned out to be one of the best games we’ve seen in a while.

Naughty Dog has proven once again that it can pull the rug out from under you and deliver an intelligent storyline that will keep you coming back. From the words, “Are you ready?” 15 minutes into the game, you’re thrown into a world that appears to be crashing down on you. You go from a scared observer to a father figure tasked with keeping your liege alive in a world bent on turning both of you into dinner. The subtle intelligence that permeates The Last of Us is hugely refreshing and rewarding: a game not to be played lightly and in return, one that doesn’t treat you like a child.

The Last of Us starts you off with nothing but a brick, and a drain pipe with a pair of scissors taped to the end. Naughty Dog’s latest game forces you to think through your approach to every encounter while keeping the tension ratcheted up to 11.

The world of The Last of Us is filled with characters you might not like at all, but you have to work with them if they’re on your side, giving the game a dose of reality rarely seen these days. The people are closed, flawed, almost unlikeable people inhabiting a grimy, mundane, painfully realistic urban nightmare.

If you’re into zombie games and own a PlayStation 3, stop reading this right now and pre-order The Last of Us. The critics say it’s a great game, and give it at least a 9/10 across the board.
