Asus sold 3 million tablet PCs in the first quarter 2013, enough product sales to help offset a drop in sales for notebooks and computer components.

Asus over Q1 2013 earned $3.5 billion with a quarterly profit of $202 million. Asus improved its year-over-year while increasing its revenue by 5.8 percent over the previous quarter.

According to Asus , sales in the United States provided 23 percent of the company’s revenues, a year-on-year improvement of 17 percent.

Asus is now predicting flat sales in the next quarter after seven quarters of increasing earnings.

With tablet sales picking up, Asus is promising to deliver small tablets with Windows 8. Recently, a leaked 8.1-inch Acer tablet was showcased after Microsoft relaxed restrictions placed against Windows 8 tablets.

Asus CEO Jerry recently suggested that Windows 8 tablets could reach below the $300 mark by the end of 2013.

Asus already offers one of the best sub-$500 Windows 8 tablets on the market via the 10.1-inch display featured Asus VivoTab Smart.

With Asus predicting flat sales in the current quarter, it would appear that the replacement for the Nexus 7 will not arrive in Q3.

In the meantime, Asus continues to split its tablet efforts between the Windows 8 and Google Android platforms.
