Fix the Franchise: Seattle Seahawks edition

The bad news is there is a ton or work to do, the good news is they have two first round draft picks to get some of that work done. First and foremost it doesn’t seem that the Seahawks got the right head coach. Pete Carroll was a great College head man, but his record in the NFL is questionable at best. We have seen this before in Washington for example, a great College coach gets a NFL gig and does a very poor job running the team. My first action item in fixing the Seahawks would be firing Pete Carroll.

In fact if I were running this team I would not have hired him in the first place. Let us not forget that the team violated teh sprit of the Rooney Rule by hiring him in the first place, and that Carroll was running away from USC and a litany of NCAA rules violations. Far too often bad football teams make bad retread hires. That is how I view the Carroll hiring, and I would have scoured the NFL assistant coaching ranks or the College ranks to find the guy to run my team on the field.

When we look at the Seahawks players needs, they need help at virtually every skill position and on both lines as well. This is not going to be an easy fix, and if they fall into the trap of picking the best player available this team is not going to get any better. There needs to be a solid plan put into place and the Seahawks have to struggle through a rebuilding process.

The Seahawks need a new QB, a young RB prospect, and help on the offensive and defensive lines. With two picks in the first round they can either trade for a veteran QB, or draft one of the 2010 QB prospects. In my mind I would wait to address the need at QB. Seneca Wallace or Matt Hasselbeck can get this team through one more year especially if they use the 6th overall pick on a quality RB. I would then spend the 14th pick addressing the needs on defense. Many 2010 Mock draft have them doing just that in reverse order.
