‘Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon’ Review Roundup

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will be released May 1 on Xbox Live Arcade. Here’s what the critics had to say after an early playthrough.

Ubisoft Montreal’s Far Cry 3 was an open-world first-person shooter based on a tropical island, which may ring familiar to Dead Island fans. Replace the zombies with pirates and you pretty much have the premise of that game.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon seems to be a completely different game. It takes place in a retro-futuristic open world, and seems to be bursting at the seams with humor. Apparently Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is what Duke Nukem tried to be. The hero is a Cyber Commando named Sergeant Rex “Power” Colt, and he takes on a plethora of cyborgs instead of pirates in an almost-apocalyptic world. Yup, that’s a pretty big leap.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is what it would be like if videogames from the 80s had the technology of today. It is stock full of hilarious references that are rarely seen in games these days. About all it shares in common with Far Cry 3 is the gameplay. Once again, why isn’t this a sequel? Possibly because it isn’t enough content to be worth the full game price. That isn’t a bad thing, though, as it ends up being a short-winded distraction you’ll want to play again.

There are only seven story missions in Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, but there’s enough to keep you busy and laughing. There are different ways to accomplish your goal of liberating enemy-controlled factions. You can run in guns blazing, or go all stealth, or lure them out and let the blood dragons do the wet work… there may be more than that, but it’s refreshing to have so many ways to complete missions.

Parody can be a tricky tightrope to walk, but Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon does it well. It makes fun of 80s science fiction in a way that will have nostalgia fans cracking up.

Not really a sequel so much as a worthy download, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon gives you enough action and humor to make it worthwhile.
