Chicago Bears continue to shake things up

To say that the Chicago Bears are a mess it somewhat of an understatement. Following the 2008 season Head Coach Lovie Smith fired his Defensive coaches in an effort to save his own job, and following the 2009 season he fired the offensive coaches, again in an effort to save his own job. Now the team has fired its Director of Pro Personnel, Booby DePaul, who has been with the team for nine seasons.

DePaul is the guy who helped the Bears win three division titles, and a NFC title in 2006, but in recent years he has done a horrible job with the team. He overpaid for QB Jay Cutler, and has left this team with no first or second round draft picks in 2010 for the second year in a row. This will force the Bears to be very aggressive in the Free Agent Market, and since there looks to be no Collective Bargaining Agreement extension in place, Free Agency will be very limited in 2010. Essentially this team has no resources to improve itself.

Not having draft picks to rebuild on the fly is a major problem for a NFL team, it is probably one of the biggest reasons that the tm fired DePaul. Rebuilding a team through free agency is a very risky proposition, and is very expensive. For a team that under achieved at 7-9 in 2009 all this is very bad news.

Now the Bears are run by dysfunction more than anything else. Smith is on his last leg as head coach, Rob Marinelli has never been a Defensive Coordinator and under achieved last year as the defensive line coach. Mike Martz takes over the offense, but has been out of the league for a few seasons, and in his last job was fired from the Detroit Lions by Marinelli. There does not seem to be a plan, but an entire organization of people scrambling to stay employed.
